Experience/training: My musical training began at the age of 9, when I began taking vocal lessons with the encouragement of my elementary school music teacher, who believed that I showed an aptitude for vocal performance. I soon joined the Kokomo Children's Choir, and began performing in musical productions for Curtain Call Children's Theater and the Kokomo Civic Theater. At the age of 10, I won a national competition, sponsored by Sunny D and Martina McBride, that afforded me the opportunity to begin taking guitar lessons. I soon began guitar instruction with Gary Rhum, as well as taking vocal and piano lessons at Rhum Academy of Music. Shortly after, I began performing publicly at a variety of venues and have been actively performing for several years. I have competed in vocal/guitar competitions at the Howard County and Indiana State fairs, earning first place wins multiple times, both at the county and state levels. In 2015, I was involved in a national vocal competition, with over 10,000 competitors, and placed in the top 10 finalists. In 2016, I auditioned in Chicago for season 11 of The Voice. After successfully completing several rounds of the audition process, I was then invited to join the season 11 cast and had the opportunity to spend 5 weeks in Los Angeles, California, working with a large group of talented musicians at Universal Studios. Unfortunately, I was one of approximately 20 that didn't get their final audition because all of the teams filled up, but it was an amazing experience that I will never forget. I learned so much about myself as a performer, and made lifelong friendships. Earlier in 2017, I was invited to participate in a Songwriter's Showcase in Nashville, Tennessee, where I was able to share some of my original compositions, and was asked to sit in on some studio sessions in Nashville. All of these experiences, as well as many others, have played a part in making me the musician I am today and I am so grateful for the instruction and guidance that I have received and the opportunities that I have had. I am currently enjoying my position as an instructor at Rhum Academy of Music, as well as writing original music, with the intention of releasing an album in the near future.
Why I Teach Music: For me, music is a fantastic outlet to be creative, express yourself, and build confidence. Nothing is more rewarding than watching someone that doesn't think they can do it eventually build the skills and confidence to excel at it! It is important to me that my students feels comfortable as they learn how to use their instrument(s) to express who they are as musicians, so I use a variety of techniques to help each student learn and grow at their own pace and in their own way. My goal is that each one develops a passion for music, never stops learning, and becomes exactly the performer that they want to be!
